More than 7000 hectares land has been reclaimed in Hong Kong since the 1840s. Although the government remains committed to a minimum reclamation plan, a number of reclamation projects in and around Victoria harbour are still ongoing.
Controversial projects include the Central Reclamation Phase III and Wan Chai Development Phase II. Along with ongoing public controversy over the Central and Wan Chai reclamations, further disputes over the West Kowloon Cultural District, the development of the old Kai Tak Airport site, the former site of the naval basin at H.M.S. Tamar, and suitable reuse of the Oil Street sites at North Point continue to emerge.
