The Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project consists in the Seoul Metropolitan Government decision to demolish the Cheonggye Expressway in order to restore Cheonggyecheon, as the most effective way to recover the ecological structure of the city.

For the past 600 years, Cheonggyecheon has been the center of Seoul's urban structure running through east and west of the city's historic center. Once a living stream, the Cheonggyecheon had all but disappeared between 1958 and 1961 with the construction of the Expressway.

After extensive discussion and preparation, the government finally decided to demolish the Cheonggye Expressway in order to restore Cheonggyecheon, as the most effective way to recover the ecological structure of the city.

The Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project is just the starting step of many other endeavors. The new waterfront will influence the redevelopment of the surrounding areas as well as business management styles of the commercial districts. This will also enable the city to promote the harmonious development of the city's regions in an effort to be reborn as an environment-friendly, international business hub.

Main success keys:
‧  Through such processes, Seoul reconfirmed its identity and rediscovered its forgotten history.
‧  The dimension of the intervention: 5,8 km length

It's a public institution intervention.
